Operation: Finding a Home for Everything

The journey of organizing my living space is ongoing! Although my closet transformation is still underway and lacks picturesque visuals, I wanted to share the behind-the-scenes work that’s taking place.

The Closet Chaos

This particular closet, located in a cozy nook, was a source of constant frustration for me. It epitomized the “just moved in” mentality that many people adopt—despite having been nearly four years since we actually moved in! This closet became a catch-all for items I was uncertain about—family photographs, cherished keepsakes, important documents, and extra pillow covers—all valuable in their own right, yet lacking a designated place.

At one point, the closet was so stuffed with fluffy pillows that they would tumble out every time I opened the door. Unfortunately, I didn’t capture that chaotic moment in a photograph.

Why We Chose a Compact Living Space

We consciously decided to live in what I refer to as a compact home. This choice meant smaller rooms, a limited yard, a single-car garage, no outdoor storage shed, no basement, and relatively small closets. After years of having more space—including extra garages, basements, and outbuildings—I learned that “extra storage space” often leads to accumulating too many belongings.

As someone who enjoys decorating, can be sentimental, and tends to procrastinate, I discovered that having fewer storage options compels me to stay organized. Without proper systems in place, clutter can easily accumulate, hidden from view but always looming in my mind, especially when I open a door to that chaotic closet.

The Importance of Systems in Small Spaces

Through my experiences, I’ve learned that smaller spaces obviously require fewer belongings, but they also necessitate more effective organizing systems. In a large house of 5,000 square feet, we didn’t need many systems to keep things tidy. While it’s often claimed that larger homes are harder to maintain, the reality is that it’s easier to hide clutter when ample storage exists.

In that oversized home, we had storage options that allowed us to toss items aside for “later,” often forgetting about them until we faced the daunting task of moving. The same situation unfolded when we moved to a slightly smaller home, which still had 1,000 square feet of storage underneath. I was shocked to discover canoes tucked away under the house during our moving day.

Rediscovering Hidden Treasures

On a lighter note, I sometimes question why I still possess certain items, like an old album from Donny and Marie. While I did enjoy their music back in the day, it’s not something I’d choose to keep now. Yet, here I am, having moved with that album approximately 13 times. Life is full of mysteries! Thankfully, I’m finding fewer random items like this as I continue my decluttering journey. Although I still have more than I’d prefer, I am making steady progress. Allow me to show you what I’ve been working on!

The Closet Dilemma and My Practical Solution

The closet in the snug area, nestled under the eaves, is among the largest storage spaces we have. I recognized its potential but knew that without stackable bins or a functional structure, it wouldn’t serve my needs effectively.

Given that we didn’t need to keep everything, I initiated a thorough editing process. I’ve made significant strides in my ability to let go of items, and having limited space certainly encourages a more decisive approach.

Once the clutter was reduced, I moved on to the enjoyable part: organizing!

Tools for Organization

White Photo Boxes

These boxes serve as the temporary home for all our loose photographs until we can scan, frame, or sort them properly. They help keep our memories safe while we figure out a more permanent solution.

Blue Stackable Bins

These soft-sided yet sturdy bins come equipped with handles and designated spots for labels, making them incredibly user-friendly. Some bins are designed for files, while others are simply open for various items. Interestingly, I ended up with two shades of blue after ordering one set later; however, that’s alright—organization doesn’t have to be perfect!

Navy Linen File Boxes

These well-constructed boxes are not only sturdy but also provide ample space. They include hanging file folders, which contribute to a well-organized environment.

Blue Magazine Holders

These holders are perfect for storing magazines and documents upright, allowing for easy access and preventing clutter.

Wall-Mounted Essential Oil Organizer

Several months ago, I added two wall-mounted shelves to optimize vertical space without cluttering the closet. While I need to trim down my essential oil collection, I cherish each one. The closet has a delightful aroma thanks to these oils!

With everything neatly stacked in the closet, there’s still enough floor space for comfortable movement—success!

The Key to an Organized Closet

The solution I implemented was straightforward yet effective. I didn’t need to install shelves or purchase new furniture—just a quick and functional fix that suits our needs now while being adaptable for the future.

Most importantly, I can now open the closet door without feeling overwhelmed. I find myself frequently checking inside to remind myself of the progress I’ve made!

Organizing Tips

  • Buy Bins in Larger Sets: If you know you’ll use them, purchasing bins in bulk can save you money.
  • Opt for Bins with Handles and Label Slots: These features make future organization much easier.
  • Declutter First, Organize Later: Avoid buying containers for items you don’t need. Focus on decluttering before diving into organization.
  • Simple Solutions Have Big Impacts: Especially in small spaces, straightforward solutions can lead to significant improvements.

The Transformation Continues

This little organizational system has made a world of difference in my life and sanity.

Upcoming Projects

Stay tuned for the next chapter of “Finding a Home for Everything.” I have an innovative idea for the closet door that addresses a completely different organizing challenge. It was a tricky issue, and I can’t wait to share the solution with you!
